The Secret Garden is a volunteer organization promoting conservation and education on the island of Koh Tao, Thailand. Whether it be teaching school children, or cleaning the beach, we are involved in many environmentally friendly projects in Koh Tao.
In order to keep the program running, the Secret Garden cooperates with i-2-i volunteers, who send a steady flow of hard working and dedicated international volunteers and teachers to Koh Tao, and www.kohtao-community.com, where more volunteers and teachers can read the news letter, learn about the ongoing projects, write in the forums and contact the program coordinator to get involved directly in the projects.
The teachers are occupied in regular English classes during the week at school, from two to four hours daily in primary grades one to six, to children aged six to twelve, and three hours weekly in nursery, to children aged three to five.
The job involves a lot of hard work and preparation outside school hours as well as the actual teaching; the teachers spend time compiling lesson plans, researching for teaching material and new activities, to constantly improve the lessons and obtain the best results from the students, they also get involved hands on helping the kids participating in environmental and community activities and events along side the volunteers.
The children study grammar, writing, reading and conversational English, and to avoid loss of focus, and create interest in learning English, the teachers make part of the lessons interactive, so the kids get to do fun activities like play educational games, singing, rhyming, drawing and painting, as well as environmental lessons to keep the kids aware and interested in conservation and be active in preserving Koh Tao. Mission Statement “The Secret Garden is dedicated to spreading Community Awareness of Eco-sustainability through Conservation projects and through the Education of Thai children in English, empowering them to shape the future of Koh Tao”
